"It was only in the theatre that I live"
Oscar Wilde
"I have always loved being in a darkened place, be it a cinema or a theatre, but I have never wanted to be kept in the dark which is why I have spent so much of my life in cinemas and theatres."
Louis B. Hobson
I remember a photograph in one of my mother's photo albums. I must be four or five years old. I'm sitting on my father's knee in a dressing room watching him put on his make up for a community theatre production. There is such awe in my eyes. It's no wonder I have devoted myself to the theatre, hoping to give others that feeling in that child's eye.
I have spent almost 60 years teaching, acting, writing, directing, designing, producing and critiquing theatre in Calgary. It has all gone by too quickly. I wish I had another 60 years of the bliss the theatre has afforded me, and of the innumerable friendships and rewards it has bestowed on me. I can honestly say I have had a life in the theatre.
Even after 60 years, I can hardly wait for the house lights to go down, because I know there will be a little, or a great deal, of magic, but there will always be magic. I see my role as a critic is to let others know how much magic to expect.
Remember when/if you choose to read me, take what I say with a grain of salt, because everything needs a little seasoning.
